Industrial PCs - robust embedded computer systems for use in industrial applications

Industrial computers can be so-called compact box PCs or embedded computers that are installed in control cabinets or server racks. They are designed to be particularly compact. But also panel PCs, i.e. all-in-one solutions consisting of computer and display are sometimes called Industrial Panel PCs. We concentrate on the embedded computer systems that are frequently used in industrial applications.

Fanless industrial PCs

Emergence of dust and dirt in industrial production processes, these can get into the equipment under certain circumstances. For this reason, fanless industrial PCs are useful here. Wear caused by dirty fans can be prevented, because the housing can be designed to be dust-tight. The ingress of liquids can also be prevented in this way. By complying with so-called IP protection classes (e.g. IP20 or IP65), reliable statements can be made about the resistance of the industrial computer.

Scalable performance through various Intel processors

You also benefit from a high number of CPU variants in our box PCs. The performance spectrum ranges from Intel Atom and i.MX8 to powerful i7 processors. Scale your IPC so that it optimally meets your requirements.

Due to the high modularity of our industrial computers you also have a high choice in terms of RAM and mass storage. Another possibility to adapt the IPCs to your requirements are interface extensions, if the standard interfaces (USB, HDMI, Displayport, Ethernet etc.) are not sufficient.

Industrial PC new Generation

The right software

Basically, a distinction can be made between Windwos, Linux and Android operating systems. We are happy to deliver your industrial PCs completely installed and ready for use. For this we install the required operating system, whether Windows or Linux with the appropriate image.

For industrial PCs with Windows operating system, we use Windows 10 IoT LTSC. Important for our industrial customers is the long service life. For embedded computers with Linux as operating system we offer the Linux distribution Ubuntu, also with a long service life.

We also adapt the hardware-related software (BIOS) to your specifications if required. In the BIOS, for example, we can store a defined boot screen on which your logo can be seen. We look forward to talking to you about the numerous possibilities.

Embedded PCs as an important component of digitalization

The Internet of Things is developing ever more strongly in the industrial environment. Industrial computers support digitization through their potential to process large amounts of information and make it available for the higher-level control of networked machines and systems.

Embedded PCs from Christ are also suitable for use as IIoT gateways and are characterized by their performance and their integrated TPM (Trusted Platform Module) chip for high security requirements.

Use of industrial-grade components in box PCs

Reliable parts and components ensure 24/7 continuous operation of the IPCs in industrial productions. After all, a failure not only causes unnecessary delays, but also costs the company hard cash. For this reason, only components suitable for industrial use are used for embedded computers from Christ. Smooth operation is particularly important to us. If something does break, individual components of the IPCs can still be replaced years later; the important keyword in this context is long-term availability.

Office and industrial PC - how robust are they?

Embedded PC systems have to function in a wide variety of environments. They are built to be particularly robust for continuous 24/7 operation. In stark contrast to this are so-called office PCs. These are not only less robust, but also have a shorter service life. The requirements for a PC in the office sector are simply much less demanding.

Why are there price differences?

Personal computers and industrial computers also differ greatly in price. Industrial computers are intricately designed, go through certifications when required, and use high-quality materials, which drives up the price. However, you always have to keep the long term in mind. Components remain compatible over a long period of time, which means software adjustments are also less common.

Demonstrable quality and sustainability

Our high-quality production is verifiable. We regularly have compliance with important ISO standards certified. For example, we meet the ISO 9001 standard for quality management systems, ISO 5001 standard for the establishment of an energy management system, and ISO 14001 standard for environmental management systems. This means you can be sure that our quality is consistently high and sustainable.

Robust design enables numerous applications

Whether DIN rail, rack or wall mounting, industrial PCs are suitable for a wide range of applications. For rack mounting, 19 inch industrial computers are installed in racks such as those found in server cabinets. The DIN rail mounting is mostly used in control cabinets. Here the IPCs are simply "clipped" onto top-hat rails. Compact box PCs are often used here, as these optimally meet the requirements of the confined space conditions.

Industrial Computers are computers that are particularly robust and are used primarily for smooth process flows in industrial production. To ensure safe processes, they must be particularly reliable and also withstand 24/7 continuous use in demanding industrial environments.

In contrast to an office PC, all components must be available for several years. In addition, IPCs have other interfaces that are mainly required in industrial environments.

Industrial PCs are available in numerous different versions. Embedded Box PCs, for example, are compact computer solutions. They are installed directly in the control cabinet or on the machine. Sometimes Touch Panel solutions are also referred to as industrial PCs. This refers to an all-in-one solution that combines both a PC and a monitor.

Another variant is the so-called Rackmount Industrial Computer. These can be integrated into 19" rack systems. There are also more compact variants of IPCs for DIN rail mounting. These are often installed in control cabinets.

Depending on the field of application and the performance requirements of the Industrial PC, different CPUs can be used. Our spectrum covers a wide range from Intel Atom to Intel Core CPUs of the 8th generation. This allows us to respond flexibly to your needs.

Especially industrial production environments are very demanding for electrical devices. Frequently, strong vibrations occur, which quickly leads to wear and tear on moving parts, such as fans. A long service life can then not be guaranteed.

Dirt such as dust or liquids cannot get inside the IPC either, since no openings are needed for air circulation. This also increases the service life and ensures freedom from maintenance. The heat generated is dissipated directly via the housing.

Basically, Windows, Linux or Android operating systems can be used. To ensure that the IPCs are immediately ready for use, we are happy to install the customer-specific operating system on the devices in advance.

For Windows, we offer Windows 20 IoT LTSC with a long service life. Our Linux distribution Ubuntu also has a long service life. If required, adjustments can also be made in the embedded software area, e.g. to store a specific boot screen.
